Hosting a Coloring Party

You might think of coloring as a solitary activity... just you, your paper with linework, and a bunch of your favorite tools. But what if you had a bunch of friends bring their markers, food, and friendly banter??

We recently hosted a coloring party; it was an absolute blast, and we wanted to share some tips and some advantages to throwing a party like ours.

TIPS:

  • Make sure that if you do have a multitude of community tools, you have some way to tell who brought what!
  • If you're serving food, have something that won't be getting on fingers (and still have good napkins, just in case).
  • Different surface areas for different types of colorists; some folks will want to sit in a cozy seat with a hard lap surface, others will feel the need for the stability of a table. One of the biggest surprises at our party was a group of people stood at the kitchen island to color their postcards. In any case, by making sure you have both static and mobile flat surfaces, you're helping setup everyone to be their most comfortable.
  • Have lots and lots of Delirious Aesthetics postcards. :)

ADVANTAGES:

  • Great conversation. Immediately being able to show off and get feed back on what you're working on, and the chance to try out different tools other people brought makes for a really unique party experience. Not enough of us regularly make art together, and coloring is a low-pressure activity that can draw a big crowd.
  • Handling logistics for people helps to get postcards into the mail faster. Simply by having stamps on hand and offering to drop off everyone's work at the post office the next day, you can help spread the joy made at your party immediately. If your attendees don't already have someone in mind to send to, you could also help them enroll in an exchange like Postcrossing.

We hope you've found a little inspiration to try throwing a party yourself!
